Bridgeport Central forfeits game

First reported by the Connecticut Post Friday, Bridgeport Central had to forefeit its season-opening victory over Staples for using an ineligible player. The player was a reserve who played late in a 83-38 blowout of the Wreckers.

The school turned itself in. The Hilltoppers are now 11-1

Career swarms Hornets

Career forced Branford into 4 of 21 from the floor in the first half to take a 13-point lead (24-11) at halftime. Career went onto to win at Branford 50-35 to remain tied with Wilbur Cross atop the SCC Oronoque.

Notre Dame clinched a tie for the SCC Quinnipiac Division crown by beating Hamden and can clinch it outright next Friday by beating Fairfield Prep.

Sheehan now has a two-game lead in the SCC Housatonic after Shelton upset Lyman Hall.

The SCC Hammonasset is not even worth discussing - except for Jengodji Gates' school-recored 13 three-point shots to help Hillhouse paste Law and clinch a tie for the division crown.
Hyde and Cromwell both won Friday night and will both be undefeated going into Wednesday's matchup at the New Haven Athletic Center.

In other action, EO Smith upset Bloomfield and East Hartford edged Windsor.

One game away

If Cromwell can beat winless Portland tonight and Hyde can beat Morgan, the two teams will be undefeated heading into their pivotal Shoreline Conference showdown next Wednesday at the New Haven Athletic Center.

This would be the second straight year these two powerhouses would be undefeated in the regular season. Cromwell won that first meeting a year ago and won three of the four times the two teams met up in 2008-09.

You will be able to read more about this rivalry in Tuesday's print edition of the Register.

Why Hillhouse prevailed

Hillhouse took an early lead, built it up, then smothered Mount Vernon guard Jabarie Hinds with a box-and-one defense.
Tavon Allen had 4-5 inches on Hinds, making it difficult for him to get loose for shots. In the box-and-one, others need to step up and Hinds' teammates never did. Mount Vernon had just 17 points by halftime - hence why Hillhouse never had to change defenses.

Freddie Wilson was plenty motivated by Wednesday's story in the Register on Hinds and played well with a game-high 21 points, along with seven rebounds and six assists. He is a complete player and is a Division I college player in the making. Allen had 18 points, making four three-point shots.

Mount Vernon would be one of the top 3-4 teams in the SCC even in what is not a vintage team under longtime coach Bob Cimmino. But if the Academics can play defense and rebound like they did Wednesday night, they can be in the Class LL final at Mohegan Sun.

But they need that consistent effort on the boards to have a chance to get there.

Hillhouse prevails

Hillhouse beats Mount Vernon 61-52. Freddie Wilson had 21 points and Jabarie Hinds unofficially had 11 for Mt. Vernon.

Hillhouse still leads

44-31 after three quarters. Freddie Wilson has 15 points and Jabari Hinds has just nine for Mt. Vernon.

Hillhouse leads 29-17 at halftime

Freddie Wilson has 16 points, four rebounds and two assists for Hillhouse, which is playing a box-and-one on Mount Vernon guard Jabarie Hinds, who has just seven points.

Hillhouse leads Mount Vernon 16-9

Jabarie Hinds has both steals for Mount Vernon. Freddie Wilson has six for Hillhouse.

4) Hillhouse (10-1) def. Foran 75-30

6) New London (11-1) def. Putnam 78-46

Career beats Wilbur Cross

Career came from behind to beat Wilbur Cross 62-56. The game was not called in by Wilbur Cross, the home team, and therefore did not make Sunday's print edition of the Register.
