League tournament predictions

So many games to choose, so much bulletin-board material to provide. Here goes:

SCC — at Branford
No. 1 Hillhouse vs. No. 8 Cheshire, 11 a.m.: Hillhouse could have some trouble with the early start, but should pull away late
No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven vs. No. 5 Amity, 12:45 p.m.: No way the Green Knights go out without at least one win for outgoing head coach Gary Palladino.
No. 2 Fairfield Prep vs. No. 7 Career, 2:30 p.m.: Prep wins this matchup for the third time.
No. 3 Wilbur Cross vs. No. 6 Xavier, 4:15 p.m.: Cross plays everyone well except Hillhouse. So the Govs move on.

Hillhouse sweeps Wilbur Cross

NEW HAVEN — It’s about that time when the Hillhouse boys’ basketball team raises the level of its defensive intensity into postseason mode.

That intensity was on full display Monday afternoon as second-ranked Hillhouse put the clamps on seventh-ranked Wilbur Cross, winning the rivalry game 52-31 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

“We focused hard on their shooters and their penetrators. We took charges,” said Hillhouse coach Renard Sutton, who has yet to lose to Cross in his three-year career. “I don’t know if we are ready yet. We showed some signs that we are almost there.”
