Montelli earns Wooten Award

Former St. Joseph boys' basketball coach Vito Montelli (pictured above with blue tie, flanked by University of Kentucky coach John Calipari and Vito's son Tommy) won the 2013 Morgan Wooten Award for boys' basketball. The award is named after the famous coach from DeMatha Catholic in Maryland. Wooten went 1,274-192 from 1956-92.

Montelli won a state record 878 games and 11 state championships, including consecutive Class LL titles in 210-11 and 2011-12. Montelli coached the Cadets for 50 seasons before retiring in August.

Sandra Meadows from Duncanville HS in Duncanville, Texas, is the girls' recipient. Both she and Montelli were selected by a nationally based committees comprised of Basketball Hall of Fame members and national high school media members among other people.

Wooten will present both Montelli and Meadows with the award during the day of the McDonald's All-American game on April 2 in Chicago.

Hillhouse vs. Prep Tuesday...and SCC tourney update

Hillhouse has clinched the SCC Hammonasset Division and Fairfield Prep the same in the SCC Quinnipiac - no surprises there.

It's now about being the top seed in the SCC tournament and possibly getting a bye in the tournament's opening round. Hillhouse hosts Fairfield Prep Tuesday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in what should be another No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Game time is 6 p.m. Hillhouse won the last matchup 59-44.

As far as the SCC tournament goes, up to 16 teams can qualify and at least that many still have a chance to. That includes Guilford, which can make postseason play for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

The sequel matches the original

Crosby vs. Wilby Thursday night was just as good as the original. Crosby won this one 88-87 with Tyshon Rogers being the hero this time with a driving layup with 4 seconds left.

A packed house at the Palace rivaled the crowd back on Jan. 14 at Wilby when Walter Wright played the hero, making a 3-point shot at the buzzer in double overtime to give Wilby the win in what was a matchup of undefeated NVL teams at the time.

And much like that game, this one had a crucial turnover with under 10 seconds left that helped set up the final shot. Check out more coverage by Joe Palladino from the Waterbury Republican-American on this classic game. It was back-and-forth action virtually the entire way and well seeing the rebroadcast on CPTV Sports (check your local listings for air times).

Count on these two teams facing one another one more time for the NVL championship later this month.

No. 1 vs. No. 2 redux?

Both Hillhouse and Fairfield Prep have one hurdle left to have the rematch next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Floyd Little Athletic Center. Both games are this evening.

Top-ranked Hillhouse takes on Career for the second time this season at the athletic center at 6. No. 2 Prep hosts Lyman Hall. If both succeed, it will likely be the same rankings. Hillhouse won at Alumni Hall 59-44 on Jan. 15.

Both teams won its games Tuesday night.
