St. Joseph boys’ basketball coach Vito Montelli was named the National Coach of the Year by the ESPNHS boys’ basketball section.


Montelli, 79, just finished his 50th season. The Cadets won their second straight Class LL state championship to finish 25-1 and the unanimous top choice in the final Register Top 10 poll. He has a state-record 878 career wins.

After a year off due to roof construction, The fifth Hopkins summer basketball league will return.

Two summers ago, there were 18 teams in the league. Rocco DeMaio, assistant athletic director and head basketball coach at Hopkins, said he will cap the league at 20 teams.

The dates and times will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting June 19th for six weeks. The cost once again will be $575.00 and each team will receive t-shirts.
