Pair reaches 1,000 points

Hamden Hall's Darren Payen went over 1,000 points for his career Wednesday in a win over St. Luke's 76-52 in the Fairchester League Tournament quarterfinals.

Billy McDonald hit the milestone for North Haven on Monday night in a win over Law in the regular-season finale.

Conference predictions, part I

The league tournaments are finally here. Let's look into our crystal ball to see who advances in Thursday and Friday's tournaments:

SCC first round - Thursday
No. 14 Shelton at No. 3 Career: Shelton makes a long awaited trip back to the postseason and gets a team that lost a game Monday with no time left on the clock. Not a good spot for the Gaels...CAREER
No. 13 Lyman Hall at No. 4 Branford: Branford has won just one game EVER in the SCC tournament and Lyman Hall will make things difficult to get No. 2...but the Hornets will find a way. BRANFORD
No. 12 Foran at No. 5 Amity: Foran has played the Spartans tough and this game will be close but...AMITY
No. 11 Cheshire at No. 6 Hamden: The two teams split during the regular season. Cheshire's guards need to get big man Nate Howard involved early and often. He also makes things difficult inside on the defensive end...CHESHIRE
No. 10 Xavier at No. 7 Hand: The Tigers stunned Wilbur Cross at the buzzer in Monday's regular-season finale? Will it carry over? Cross beat Xavier twice during the regular season, so it would seem Hand has the edge. Xavier has been inconsistent all season long. I think the good Xavier shows up Thursday. XAVIER.
No. 9 North Haven at No. 8 Wilbur Cross: Tese two Oronoque Division rivals split during the regular season on the other's home court. Hillhouse awaits the winner. WILBUR CROSS IN A CLOSE ONE.

CCC first round, Thursday
No. 16 Simsbury at No. 1 Hartford Public: HTFD PUBLIC STAYS UNDEFEATED
No. 9 Bristol Eastern at No. 8 Maloney: MALONEY
No. 13 East Catholic at No. 4 Farmington: EAST CATHOLIC
No. 12 Glastonbury at No. 5 Manchester: MANCHESTER IN OVERTIME
No. 15 New Britain at No. 2 Windsor: WINDSOR BY DOUBLE DIGITS
No. 10 Bloomfield at No. 7 East Hartford: EAST HARTFORD
No. 14 Newington at No. 3 Northwest Catholic: These two teams just played on Monday. NORTHWEST CATHOLIC WINS CONVINCINGLY AGAIN.
No. 11 Berlin at No. 6 Middletown: BERLIN

CSC first round, Friday
I'd be very surprised if the top four seeds (No. 1 Capital Prep, No. 2 Kaynor Tech, No. 3 Classical Magnet and No. 4 Goodwin Tech) don't all advance at home.

Career-Hillhouse highlights

Here are some video highlights from Hillhouse's 47-46 win over Career on Monday.

The only way these two teams can play one another again would be in the SCC tournament final next Tuesday at the TD Bank Sports Center at Quinnipiac.

Controversy reigns in New Haven

Career had come all the way back to tie the game against Hillhouse at 46 with just over 5 seconds left.
Andre Anderson takes the inbounds, heads up court, lets fly...and two sounds are heard: the final buzzer and a whistle for a foul. Anderson makes the second of two free throws to win for Hillhouse 47-46.

Read the story and watch the video here and judge for yourself if the right call was made.

Hillhouse is now the top seed in the SCC tournament and gets a bye. Career falls to No. 3 and hosts Shelton on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
