Vito Montelli to retire?
The longtime St. Joseph boys' basketball coach is not saying, but multiple sources indicated to the Register Friday that Montelli will likely announce his retirement at a Wednesday morning press conference announced by Montelli himself.
One source said the state's all-time winningest coach with 878 victories hasn't made up his mind yet. ""He really hasn't made his mind up yet and that I know for sure," the source said Friday.
Assuming Montelli does step down, indications point to assistant coach Chris Watts taking over. Watts played for Montelli, graduating in 1987. He went on to star at Providence College.
St. Joseph went 25-1 last season, winning the Class LL state championship over Hillhouse for Montelli's record 11th state title. The Cadets also finished a unanimous No. 1 in the Register Top 10 poll.
